5 Things Leaders can Learn from Rahul Dravid

Should I get all or Should All get equal?

Recently the Wall of Indian Cricket, Rahul Dravid was in news for all the right reasons as always in the offline and online media for his fairness in the rewards announced for Coach, Players and Support Staff.

Though the BCCI has announced Rs. 50 Lakhs for the Coach, Rs. 30 Lakhs for Players and Rs. 20 Lakhs for the Support staff of the winning Indian Under 19 Cricket Team, Rahul Dravid was of the opinion that there should be parity in the cash rewards announced.

He therefore decided to take a pay cut and so that every member of the coaching staff including Dravid would receive an equal amount of Rs. 25 Lakhs.

His exact words were:

“It’s a bit embarrassing at times because I tend to get a lot of attention and focus, but it is really about the support staff and the quality of people that we’ve had. “

This simply shows the humility of the man and the fairness that each one plays their part together to achieve bigger success.

  1. Team is a family of Team Members

Everyone who is a leader would mostly have wide experience of people handling skills. However do they consider each team member as a family member? Mistakes can happen by anyone and wins and losses
are part of operating as a team. During Mistakes the team member needs support and during Good Work done (even if little) the team member requires motivation so that the team member keeps functioning with optimum energy. The Leader may have to sometimes face the blunt but he is experienced enough to tackle the situation.

  1. Everyone needs to move forward

Leaders, by experience know how to keep their best forward in front of the management which allows them to keep moving forward. However, the leader should also care enough for the team members and also keep a track of the good work done by the team member which he can put in front of the
management which allows even the team member to move forward. What’s the use of moving forward alone without helping the team member?

  1. Interest needs to be displayed

A Leader has been given all the power for team functioning like delegating work, giving orders, giving feedback and getting the work done. The leader sometimes manages various roles and has various team members reporting into him but if he is interested in some areas of work and does not prioritize or gives less importance to other areas which they feel may not be important, the team members may also feel aloof and may lose interest in that work.

  1. Mentoring is the key

Leaders over a period of time would have developed various skills through training and attending seminars. The question here is how much of that learning is shared with the team members. Everyone likes to learn something new and develop themselves so that the dependability on
others decreases and they can stand out for something. However, if the leader does not share their learning and does not delegate other tasks which will enable employee learning then the employee feels stuck with same knowledge and skills he already possesses.

  1. Creating Future Leaders

A successful leader is the one who can create more leaders like him. A leader can do that when he is open about all his job responsibilities to his team members and shows them the challenges that he faces. What this does is that it creates an open culture of work and team members tend to understand their leaders issues in a better way. A team member may be assigned a particular work but if he is aware of all the tasks his leader does then he maybe just be able to help the leader in case he possesses some
knowledge about the task the leader is stuck with.

Collaborative Leaders work with the team till the end

Conclusion: A Leader has to be the ladder for his team’s success
