Social Media: A Curse or a Cure?

Social Media Apps in The Smartphone

Social media, a desideratum of today, has become an nondetachable part of our lives. It has been a platform for many to showcase to showcase their talents, but, at the same time, it can be totally destructive.

Social media has been a blessing to the world in multitudinous ways. It provides recreation if you’re stuck in boredom, acts as a bridge between people miles away, gives you the liberty to put up your opinions and allows the world to discover you. Today, information of anything is available at the tip of your fingers. Gone are the days when media was restricted to the elites. Technological advancements have helped humans evolve through time and have assisted them to become the best form of themselves. The amicable media unknowingly succour the one in need of motivation, inspiration and even consolation. Since the past two decades, it has even become a shoulder to cry on. Now-a-days, people even become prominent figures through the media, and, the YouTubers of today are the biggest examples.

But, the pros always comes with the cons. Ever since Social media has evolved, cyber crime has taken a hit. Online harassment has led people towards depression and suicide too! An American survey discloses that 1 out of 10 people have become a victim of Cyber bullying today. In extreme cases, people have succumbed to mental trauma and loneliness. We can term all of these as the side effects of Social media. Apart from the technological ill effects, there have also been many other detrimental consequences. The true essence of human contact is lost. No matter what, but an online robot can never replace a human. The values of belonging, attachment is fading away. While trying to connect with people far away, we are drifting away from people near us. We ourselves are building an invisible wall between us and our dear ones.

As helpful as Social media has been in my life, I also have experienced the negative side of it. The one thing that vexes me about media is the way people use it. A person in real life portrays to be someone else in the reel life. On Social Media, people come along with a facade. Below, the mask, there is a whole new person. We try to become someone else on media and end up losing our true self. We try to seek help from strangers, even though we have acquaintances. People take advantage of our situations and further we give in to their advices. This is how the world works today.

We need to understand that media is not a platform to show off our vices and possessions, but, it a place to showcase your true self and your capabilities. It is a media, not to be used to create a mess by causing trouble to others, but, it is a place to give a helping hand to the fallen.

So, the question still remains, is Social media a curse or a cure?

The only is that, that depends on how you use it.
