The guru-shishya parampara (teacher-student tradition) has been a part of Indian culture for thousands of years. The relationship between a guru and his shishya is based on responsibility, devotion to learning and mutual respect. In India, we believe that our first gurus are our parents. This is why respect for parents and what they represent is such an ingrained part of our cultural ethos.

Gu in Sanskrit means ‘Darkness’ and Ru means ‘remover of darkness’. Put the two syllables together and you get GURU – a guiding force that removes all the darkness in our life and brings us closer to illumination and knowledge. When life is full of cloudy skies and we see no way out of our struggles, our guru shines a light on us and leads us towards the right path – a path that brings us both untold success and valuable learning.

Did you know that Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima in honour of Vyas Muni, the author of India’s most famous epic, the Mahabharata? Vyas Muni was born on the full moon day of the Hindu month Ashad. This year this day falls on 16th July. Vyasa in Sanskrit means to divide. Vyas Muni divided the Vedic hymns into four parts: Jaimini, Vaisampayana, Sumantu and Paila. He also divided the Vedas into four parts: Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. To this day, the full moon day in Ashad is celebrated as the ‘Day of the Guru’ or Guru Purnima.

Today, the word guru can mean a teacher, leader, expert or authority figure. Your guru can be your professional or business mentor, spiritual guide or even a senior relative you admire or look up to. Whoever he or she is, we’re sure they guide, instruct, counsel and advise you and lead you towards your own path of illumination and knowledge.

Why not celebrate your guru and the special role they play in your life?
