5 Management And Leadership Lessons from Mahabharata

India has always been the land of culture and heritage  ,it gave the world not only spices, great leaders and thoughts but some great values in the fields of management and leadership! And this important cooperate lessons are given by none other than the very own greatest epics of India! Yes you got   it right! The best management and leadership lessons are given by the greatest mythological epic of all time! The MAHABHRATA! Don’t believe us, well here   are   the five best and most worthy management and leadership lessons that Mahabharata gave us!

Management functions that MAHABHARATA gave us:

1. PLANNING – Making framework or blueprint of a task

Most institutions give training and lectures on the this topics like how   to plan  a perfect programme and to make it successful one, but we tend to forget that the best lessons of planning are given by our mythological stories of  Mahabharata, here is  an apt example which explains the perfect planning skills of Krishna the ultimate leader of Kurukshetra,

Example :
In-spite of having an army of 100 the Kauravas lost the war but even after having just 5 people in the group the Pandavas won! Reason being planning skill by the group leader. Exact and accurate planning of work can lead you to the success  path very smoothly and the same is very well explained through the count of Kauravas and Pandavas; 5 was stronger than 100! and all thanks to the planning skills!

2.TIME MANAGEMENT – Assigning duration to the tasks

May it be a working with a firm or individual, time management is and always should be  a priority because if we don’t manage our time   in a correct  way we will end up working like a donkey who continuously works and works and works! But in todays scenario we need to do ‘’smart work rather than “hard work’’ again explained in Mahabharata,

Example :
The time management skills in Mahabharata can be defined as the sound of the huge beagle would start   the war and in the evening one final horn would blow up to end it, through this system the war would not  be continued for  many hours and tire the solders! Again time management plays crucial and important role in every field, right from real life to even wars!

3. STAFFING – Appointing the right person, on the right place

As a group leader one should have the correct knowledge of appointing the correct   person to the position, this helps in making the project the best one as all the qualified people are appointed on the correct place.

Example :
The main reason why the five won over the 100 in-spite of being almost 20 times larger than them, they managed to win because the group leader appointed the most right person on the right place and hence they won the war and as they say, ‘’too many cooks spoil the broth’’! and the same was proved in Mahabharata.

4. DIRECTING – Guiding someone to the correct path.

Explaining someone about how to work and what way one should lead a path is the code mantra of management! It’s the responsibility of the leader to acknowledge their fellow mates to be on the right path, when they get distracted from their future goal!

Again explained very well in Mahabharata; there was a time in the war when the greatest archer of the century lost his strength when he saw his relatives killing each other and was on the verge of giving up on the war at a very crucial stage but here again, Krishna being the leader explains Arjuna that completion of the goal is important than fearing the opponents! Again Krishna giving some serious management knowledge to all of us!

After studying these 4 main lessons of management well explained by the Mahabharata, Here is some more things Mahabharata has explained us very well, and this time its something every individual comes across in their life the quality every individual has to built in their self, the quality of LEADERSHIP!

5. LEADERSHIP – Executing responsibly for the task taken

Lets have a look at what quality lessons Mahabharata gave us in terms of LEADERSHIP!

(a) Transform individual goals to company goals

The biggest failure of Kauravas in Mahabharata was they fought with different goals with the super united Pandavas, who had a single goal and hence could reach the target easily, and won the battle, a leader should always give a clear vision of the goal to its members, for the accomplishment of their goal.

(b) Know the worth of your team member

As a group leader, one needs to understand that every team member is special and using this special skills,  The team can not only excel in the terms of progress, but also helps individual growth of a person which is very important!

Example :
Krishna
was the group leader of the five Pandavas, his vision was so clear that, he used each and every quality of the Pandavas, Arjun was a well trained archer and Krishna used his archery for ending up Arjun and the enemies of Pandavas! The strength of Bheem, was used to defeat the mightiest warriors. Yudishthir with his sword power defeated the Kauravas and all the brothers under the guidance of Krishna; the leader won the war!

The correct use of leadership skills can lead one to the path of excellence!
